Mossy Oak Bottomland Featured on All-New Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus Shotgun
(AmmoLand.com) WEST POINT, MS – Mossy Oak’s Bottomland pattern will be on the new Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus 12-gauge shotgun. Thanks to the merging of the platform’s proven reliability and Bottomland’s unique camouflaging capabilities, the new A400 is the consummate hunting shotgun.
Mossy Oak Bottomland is the pattern that started it all more than three decades ago, launching a camouflage lifestyle unlike any other. Toxey Haas created Bottomland to mimic the earthy tones found in dark hardwoods and flooded timber, the latter of which makes it a stellar choice for the newest A400 Xtreme Plus. Bottomland isn’t only for the forest, it’s for the flooded timbers known for drawing a variety of waterfowl species from mallards to wood ducks.
Mossy Oak Bottomland Featured on All-New Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus Shotgun
Waterfowlers hunting flooded timber understand the necessity of a shotgun that blends in; the last thing a duck hunter wants is to be exposed by their firearm. The A400 Xtreme Plus is meant for those waterfowlers, seasoned and newcomers alike. In addition to its waterfowl-friendly finish it boasts a 14-inch forcing cone for superior reduction in recoil, enhanced patterning, and improved range. That feature in conjunction with its 3 ½” chamber and Beretta’s Optima-Choke HP choke tubes and signature Kick-Off Mega system make the A400 Xtreme Plus a soft-shooting, accurate shotgun ideal for both hunters and clay-shooters.
Available now, the A400 Xtreme Plus is designed with numerous components meant for the unique challenges hunters face. From its enlarged port, which facilitates loading in extreme weather, to its extended charging handle and bolt release that allow easier manipulation while wearing gloves, it is truly made for those who hunt the skies.
The Mossy Oak Bottomland-patterned A400 Xtreme Plus will be put through its hunting paces during Beretta’s Torture Tour when the North American waterfowl season begins fall 2018. The Torture Tour involves a selection of hunters taking part in a series of hunts in iconic locations, utilizing the A400 throughout. Their stories and experiences will be chronicled through photographs and videos on a variety of platforms including Beretta’s Facebook and Instagram channels. For more information on Beretta’s Tourture Tour, visit the the Beretta website.
The stunning colors and eye-catching variations in duck species are an amazing facet of nature and Mossy Oak is proud to reflect another aspect of that artistry with Bottomland. This coming waterfowl season we look forward to Beretta’s A400 Xtreme Plus in Mossy Oak Bottomland gracing duck pits and layout blinds across the country. Mossy Oak is proud to play a role in the successful hunts of waterfowlers nationwide.

USA-(Ammoland.com)- There are a ton of facts about America's most popular poly pistol that most people don't know but here are 10 things that you probably didn't know about Glock, even if you are a passionate gun enthusiast. Many of these facts are pulled from the excellent book by Paul Barrett called Glock: The Rise Of America's Gun.
While many feel that the Glock is uninteresting, there are some facts about the pistol's development and other interesting facts that might grab your attention.
Maritime Spring Cups Standard?
Traditionally Glock has not offered the coveted maritime spring cups to civilian Glock owners, much less offered a pistol with them installed from the factory.
The maritime cups are designed to allow water to flow past the spring cups after the pistol is submerged in water. With standard spring cups, the striker can become hydro locked and fail to have enough speed to ignite a primer if there is water in the striker channel.
Standard Spring cups on left, Maritime spring cup on right. The slide of this Glock 19X was milled by ATEi.
The Glock 19X is the only pistol that Glock has ever offered to the public with Maritime spring cups installed from the factory officially. Now my personal Glock 34 Gen 5 also shipped with the maritime springs cups but Glock's parts order form only states that replacements are available for the 19X. If you are an armorer that needs to replace the easily lost parts, Glock requires that the armorer must include the serial number of the pistol being repaired.
Obviously, the Maritime spring cups are available for purchase by LEO armorers and on the secondhand market.
Left Handed Test Firing?
When the first Glock pistol was being designed, Gaston Glock hadn't really ventured into firearm manufacturing and predictably did not have the testing facilities that Glock now has.
Dave Merrill Test Firing a Polymer 80 frame for RECOIL. Used with permission.
Gaston built a firing range in his basement to test the crude prototypes after eating dinner. While one might expect Gaston to construct a fixture to test the pistols in, he instead used his left hand and only shot alone.
Why his left hand? That way if the gun blew up, he still had his right hand to draw mechanical plans.
Birth Of The Glock Grip Angle
The infamous Glock grip angle that many hate to love and love to hate was something that Gaston felt was an extremely important element of the pistol's design. In order to more fully understand the thought process behind the grip angle that Gaston chose, one has to understand that military doctrine of the time was to shoot a pistol with one hand, body bladed to the target.
Gaston invited several guests to join him at his vacation home in Velden, Austria and asked those guests several questions about what they wanted from a military sidearm. One of the design elements that Gaston intended to figure out was what angle the grip should be.
The Glock Grip Angle is measured as shown.
He passed mockups of pistols made from pieces of wood nailed together around and asked his guests to aim at something with both their eyes open, as well as their eyes closed. The thought process was that aiming the new sidearm should be instinctual and shouldn't take much effort.
The consensus among his guests was that a grip angle of 22-degrees was ideal, but Gaston later reduced the angle slightly somewhere in between 20 to 21 degrees.
Die Hard 2 Was The Glock's First Movie Appearance
Die Hard 2 was the Glock 17's first big appearance in a film, and it was slated to be the gun of choice for the bad guy. Glock didn't much care that the pistol was not being used by the hero and was merely happy that their pistol was going to get some exposure in a Hollywood blockbuster.
Birth of the Ghost Gun. Now you might recall the scene where Bruce Willis refers to the mythical Glock 7 as “made from porcelain” and wonder why the heck someone who knew better didn't speak up and stop the stupidity.
The onset Armorer from Cinema Weaponry, Mike Papac, tried to talk the movie-makers out of using that line since it was grossly untrue. Papac says that the folks in charge of the movie flat out wouldn't budge and that the line was written into the script and that was the end of the conversation.
For now and ever more every gun banning Democrat and media hack will use this line to call for banning plastic and 3D printed guns, to save the children.
Glock 17 Was Not Named For Its Capacity
Gaston Glock was a reasonably prolific inventor and already had 16 patents on file when he started work on what would later become the Glock 17. Since the pistol design would be his 17th patent, he called the design the Glock 17. The coincidence with the capacity of the pistol was nothing more than circumstantial.
The Glock Spade is one of Gaston's many patents.
Gaston holds a variety of patents that have nothing to do with firearms. Those patents include a folding spade that was designed as an entrenching tool, a method for removal of heavy metals, as well as a patent for a method of treating vaginitis…ewe. Now I know you did not know that about Glock.

NRA Carry Guard Intermediate Course – After Action Report
USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- I have been a lifelong firearm enthusiast. I joined NRA as a teenager and have been an unapologetic supporter of the organization for my entire adult life. The time that I spent at NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action as a state liaison, working in the state capitols on behalf of gun owners, remains the highlight of my professional career. More than a decade as a contributor to NRA Publications has built my technical and practical knowledge base and allowed me to pass along some of what I’ve learned to readers. That said, I had not taken an NRA training course in many years. Once I progressed beyond the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor and Range Safety Officer courses, I sought out training opportunities outside of the universe. NRA’s course curriculum was focused on a student population that, correctly or not, I felt that I had moved beyond. That was before NRA Carry Guard.
This spring, I attended the three-day NRA Carry Guard Intermediate training course. I had high hopes for the course, given my respect for the individuals who built the program, but I reserved judgment until I saw it from a student’s perspective. I went into it with an open mind but was prepared to provide critical feedback if it was warranted. After experiencing the course firsthand, I can say without hesitation that NRA has developed a training program that takes a backseat to no other organization or company. In my mind, this course is the standard by which other defensive handgun courses should and will be judged.
I have attended some excellent training courses at various shooting schools in the past but, when viewed holistically, none of them consistently provided this level of instruction. Some schools are very strong in one subject area but lacking in others, which is not the case with NRA Carry Guard. Every element of the training was equally strong: the shooting fundamentals, weapon manipulations, gear selection, the moral/ethical/legal considerations, and the situational elements of the training. The NRA Carry Guard course is informative and challenging and is a good use of the students’ time and resources. In short, the curriculum was excellent. The shooting test was a humbling experience for many of the students and was an invaluable part of the program. Participation awards give students a false sense of security and confidence: Every student that shot the qualification, myself included, now has a precise benchmark by which to measure their performance.
My instructors for the course were Jeff Houston and Eddie Penney.
Jeff served overseas in Army Special Forces and has applied his private security expertise to serve clients both in the U.S. and abroad. Eddie is a Navy SEAL veteran with significant combat experience who has specialized in international security consultation. I have trained under some of the “big names” in the industry but, candidly, none hold a candle to these two individuals. The confidence and competence of these men ensured that the students were immediately engaged and kept the usual pontification and storytelling among the students to a minimum. Their lectures were informative and enjoyable and their balance of professionalism and sense of humor kept the class’ attention. Their skills on the range during the demonstrations quickly established their credibility. The learning environment was safe but realistic. Though they weren’t standing around telling war stories, their real-world experience was evident and added significant weight and credibility to the material. As this program expands, I would highly recommend resisting any action that might dilute the quality of the instructor cadre—they are a key component of what will set NRA Carry Guard apart and should be treated as such.
It isn’t always easy for young men and women, particularly those with families, to dedicate the time and resources to attend a firearms training course; trust me, I get it. Many of the courses that I have attended in recent years have been filled with retired individuals who had the time and resources to train—I’m all for it but would love to see a younger generation embrace the value of training. I’m happy to see that this is beginning to evolve and I hope that the NRA Carry Guard courses continue to attract younger students. If a young professional who carries a firearm knew that they could show up to this course and receive excellent instruction from the strongest cadre of firearms instructors in the industry, they would be lining up to do it.
The decision to build a more introductory course into the framework was definitely a good move: Some of the students in my class struggled to perform under the demands of the training, and building an onramp before the Intermediate and Advanced courses was a good plan. The NRA Carry Guard Basic training course will ensure that students have the skills and confidence necessary to proceed to the more advanced courses.
I will close by saying that NRA Carry Guard is a program to be proud of and I am honored to be affiliated with its magazine. Our only challenge at this point is to help spread the gospel so that others can see what has been built by the hard work of Jack Carr, Eric Frohardt, Jeff Houston, James Jarrett, and everyone else who was involved in its development.

USA –-(Ammoland.com)- The U.S. economy has been growing and breaking records ever since President Trump first took office and Republicans took control of Congress.
Many in the GOP are hoping this success will help them get re-elected in November. Some consultants I’ve spoken with seem to think it will inoculate Republican candidates against most all Democratic attacks.
They are mostly right, except for one area – health care.
No doubt, Republicans should be proud of the enormous success of the economy. But the economy won’t reach its full potential and the GOP will not win big in the 2018 elections unless Republicans deal with the cost of health care in America.
The reason is simple:
Health care represents nearly one-fifth of our country’s economy and is the largest driver of government spending. It is also such a huge slice of household budgets that many Americans don’t end up feeling the benefits of the 4.1 percent growth in gross domestic product (GDP). In 2016, individual health care costs amounted to $10,328 per person (in 1960, that figure was $146).
As Dave Winston and Myra Miller at The Winston Group have noted, with nearly half of Americans saying they are living paycheck-to-paycheck (with no reserves for emergencies) it is hard for people to “feel the prosperity” implicit in a remarkably strong macroeconomy. Their individual micro-economies are too deeply impacted by the cost of health care.
Additionally, health care costs are out-pacing income growth because businesses have had to eschew raises and promotions to afford more and more health care costs. According to a 2017 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Education Trust and federal income data, “premiums for an employer-provided family insurance plan have climbed 19 percent, while worker pay increased 12 percent.” The additional money Americans are receiving in their paycheck from the Tax Cut and Jobs Act helps, but lowering health care costs still needs to be a priority.
Fortunately for Republicans – and for the country – we now have leadership capable of developing a serious strategy for a dramatically improved health care system. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar has the knowledge and the experience to help shape a new, profoundly better health system for all Americans.
Secretary Azar’s move this week to widen access to less expensive, short-duration health insurance plans was a step in the right direction. These plans will give Americans more options to buy the level of insurance they need for themselves – rather than being forced to buy more expensive coverage they don’t necessarily need.
President Trump’s earlier announced plan for reducing prescription drug prices will also be a huge help for families, and the Administration’s support for the expansion of association health plans will provide more options for small businesses and self-employed individuals.
So, while there is still more work to be done, Republicans can point to positive steps that have been taken and progress that has been made — but they can’t shy away from talking about health care.
This reality of half the nation operating on the margin is what drives support for government-run health care, which is now sweeping large parts of the Democratic Party. If Republicans refuse to articulate a better solution, a large portion of the American people will decide that government bureaucracy is better than constant economic anxiety about unknowable, increasing health costs.
As I have written before, if the Left wins on health care and puts in place a single-payer system, it would be a disaster.
So, to truly win the economic argument, Republicans must think through and win the health care argument. The dynamics of the fall campaign give them no choice. The Democrats’ government-run health care system will fill the gap left by the absence of a serious Republican alternative.
There is a long tradition of Republicans trying to avoid health issues. Consultants assert “it isn’t our topic.” Incumbents find it hard to communicate a clear policy or plan for improving the health system. “Repeal and Replace” was largely about repeal because Republicans lacked a coherent plan to replace Obamacare. This is why it failed.
A Republican Party that hides from the challenge of modernizing the health system is a party which has conceded a huge part of the political playing field to the Left.
Conversely, a Republican Party that can explain common sense improvements that will empower Americans to have longer lives, better health, greater convenience, more choices, and lower costs in health care is a party that can easily demolish the Left’s arguments.
Newt Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. After he was elected Speaker, he disrupted the status quo by moving power out of Washington and back to the American people.

July 2018 Marks Biggest Month in NRA Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program History
USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- The National Rifle Association's Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program reached another milestone in its 30th anniversary year, as the program fulfilled more requests for Eddie Eagle program materials in the month of July 2018 than any other month in program history!
The NRA provided more than 250,000 Eddie Eagle student workbooks throughout July primarily to law enforcement agencies throughout the nation, many of whom will use the materials to teach firearm accident prevention during community events, such as the National Night Out this summer.
NRA Eddie Eagle
In the program’s three decades of outreach, more than 30 million children across the United States have learned NRA’s simple, effective firearm accident prevention principles. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional firearm fatalities among children of the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program’s targeted age group have declined almost 80 percent since the program’s debut.
Created in 1988 by NRA Past President Marion P. Hammer, the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program is a gun accident prevention program developed by a task force made up of educators, school administrators, curriculum specialists, urban housing safety officials, clinical psychologists, law enforcement officials and National Rifle Association firearm safety experts.
The program was founded with one mission: to teach children four simple, easy to remember steps so they know what to do if they ever come across a gun — STOP! Don't Touch. Run Away. Tell a Grownup.
Impacting approximately a million children a year, the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program has been utilized by more than 28,000 schools, law enforcement agencies, and civic groups. The governors of 26 states have signed resolutions recommending that the program be used in their school systems and the legislatures of 25 states passed resolutions recommending the use of the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program.
The National Rifle Association's Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program fulfilled more requests for Eddie Eagle program materials in the month of July 2018 than any other month in the program's 30-year history.
Funds raised through Friends of NRA and distributed through The NRA Foundation enable schools and police departments to teach the program at minimal or no cost. The NRA encourages citizens nationwide to participate in heightening gun accident prevention awareness within their local communities. School administrators and faculty, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, and others interested in more information about the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program should contact the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program by email at eddie@nrahq.org or call (800) 231-0752. Unveiled during the 2018 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in early May in Dallas, Texas, the Brownells M203 37mm Launchers are close copies of M203 40mm Grenade Launchers first issued to the U.S. military in 1969, and currently in military use worldwide.
Manufactured by Lewis Machine & Tool, the M203 37mm launchers attach to standard Government rifle and carbine length barrels on AR-15 style rifles, sold separately, with .625″ front diameter and a GI-compatible barrel nut, including various models of Brownells Retro Rifles chambered in 5.56.
Brownells – LMT M203 37mm Launcher
“Lewis Machine & Tool has been a longtime supplier of the 40mm M203 Grenade Launcher to the US Military, and now Brownells is proud to partner with LMT to offer a 37mm M203 Flare Launcher to the firearms enthusiast, collector and reenactor,” said Brownells Director of Product Management Paul Levy. “Neither a destructive device or controlled FFL item, owning an authentic M203 has never been more straightforward and accessible.”
Because of their smaller, smooth bores, and inability to accept 40mm projectiles, the 37mm launchers do not require an FFL for purchase, nor any special registration to own.
Fireworks, flares, smoke rounds, “bird bombs” and other 37mm launcher ammo is widely available from several sources.
In addition to the launchers themselves, Brownells also offers accessories and the required mounting kits for the 37mm M203 Launchers:

“For the CSVFD, these events are critical in raising funds for their operating budget and without this type of support from many of the vendors, these volunteer firemen would not be able to fully do their jobs of protecting their neighbors and neighborhood,” Greg Buchel, president of Big Horn Armory, said. “Pennsylvania has a long and strong history of hunting and the Sportsmen’s Bash is just one example of where thousands of local and regional people will come to show support for their traditional way of life and raise money for their public safety pros.”
The Sportsmen’s Bash is a huge 5-hour raffle benefiting the Castle Shannon Fire Department. Tickets for the event are $50 and provide not only entry into the event, but all you can eat and drink throughout the day, as well as entry into all 62 of the main ticket raffles. Drawings are held every 5 minutes and include firearms, multiple $10K cash prizes, a Harley Davidson, a Disney vacation package and one final $30K prize draw at the close of the day. Each event ticket has two numbers on it and each can be drawn as a winner an unlimited number of times and you need not be present to win. In addition to the main ticket, several side raffles will be held offering those participating a chance to win one of three premium firearms including the Big Horn Armory M89 “Spike Driver.” For more information on the event, or to purchase tickets please visit https://www.csvfd.org/Mega/THEPRIZES.htm.

The Big Horn Armory Model 89, made in America, closely follows the work of John Browning with refinements courtesy of modern metallurgy and machining capabilities. The first rifles began shipping in September of 2012 and since then, BHA has added to their big bore lineup with a Model 90 Carbine in 460 S&W, the Model 90A in 454 Casull, the Model 90B in .45 Colt, the Model 89A in 500 Linebaugh and the Model 89B in .475 Linebaugh. In 2017, Big Horn Armory took a departure from its lever-action series and developed the AR500 Auto Max, the most powerful short-range, semi-auto based on an AR .308 platform.

Pillager, MN – (Ammoland.com) – Kahr Firearms Group is proud to continue to raise money for veterans through Magnum Research, Inc and the “13 Hours Desert Eagles” Project.
Less than a year ago, Kahr Firearms Group announced a fundraising collaboration with John “TIG” Tiegen, member of the Benghazi Annex Security team, hero of the Benghazi attack and co-author of the book 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi. Together, they developed a project to help support veteran foundations across the country.
The “13 Hours Desert Eagles” Project has raised over $120,000 to date, with 100% of the proceeds donated to these veteran foundations.
In staying with the “13 Hours” theme, the project offers thirteen Special Edition Magnum Research .50AE Desert Eagle pistols featuring the Kryptek Typhon pattern, and engravings of the TIG logo, TIG’s signature and the Beyond the Battlefield logo – the foundation TIG and his wife Margaret founded. The pistols are numbered 1 through 13 and have been provided to the following organizations for their fundraising events, each personally chosen by TIG:

“This project has been an honor to be a part of. When the idea first arose for the thirteen guns, I never imagined we would be able to help raise this amount of money, and we are not done yet! There are still three more guns left to raffle or auction this fall,” says Jodi DePorter, Director of Marketing at Kahr Firearms Group. “We, of course, must thank Tig and his wife, Margaret, for their unending commitment to helping veterans and working with us on this collaboration. Without them, this would not have been possible.”

YouTube personality, Graham Baates, gives us a video review of the Steyr S9-A1 Pistol.
Steyr S9-A1 Pistol
USA – – (Ammoland.com)- The Steyr pistols have been in production for nearly 20 years and developed a sort of cult-like following. Like another famous Austrian company Steyr pistols have a polymer frame, but offer a much more refined design and feel and have since the beginning. The S9-A1 is the smallest in the lineup with a 3.6″ barrel.
Steyr S9-A1 Pistol
Fans of the Steyr pistols note the incredibly low-profile slide and high grip permitted by a deeply cut tang and slightly more forward grip angle. The other most notable difference with Steyr pistols are their trapezoidal sights. These sights prove quick to align after the user gets accustomed to them. For those who don't want to learn a new sighting system TRUGLO TFX sights are also an option. For a closer look at the features and design see the tabletop video below.
I was curious how the grip angle, high tang, and relatively slim slide would feel on the range. Although firearm function doesn't vary from most common pistols these days I was also interested to see how the change in weight distribution combined with the 3.6″ barrel would run. This of course meant it was time for a “What's for Dinner?” test running loads from 165gr down to 65gr. This test is intended to find out load and case material compatibility.
Loads tested in the Steyr S9-A1 Pistol included:
165gr FMJ brass-cased Freedom Munitions HUSH
147gr JHP brass-cased Remington HTP
125gr HAP lacquered-steel cased Hornady
124gr FMJ brass-cased American Eagle Suppressor
124gr BJHP nickel-plated brass-cased Remington Golden Saber
115gr FMJ aluminum-cased Federal
115gr FMJ steel-cased TulAmmo
115gr XTP brass-cased Hornady American Gunner
100gr RHVF brass-cased Fiocchi
94gr RHTA brass-cased Geco
90gr ZCFMJ Winchester Super Clean
65gr ZCFMJ Liberty Civil Trainer
Results of the tests including a field accuracy group of five shots from seven yards using Nosler Match ammunition can be seen in the video below:
Grouping performance was likely more my fault that then gun's. Otherwise I haven't experienced a single failure with the Steyr S9-A1. The ergonomics are excellent and the grip angle required only a few practice runs to adapt to. Recoil did feel softer than similarly-sized guns. Of course felt-recoil is nothing but perception, and I can't narrow down the source of my perception. Between the grip angle, high tang, excellent ergonomics, and lower-seated recoil system the gun just feels good to shoot. As you saw in the video even Maddy's feminine hands had no issue with the gun.
For the numerophiles here are the specifications for the Steyr S9-A1 Pistol taken directly from Steyr's product page:
Caliber
9mm
Magazine
10+1
Trigger
Reset Action (double action)
Grip Frame
Synthetic Grip
Dimensions
6.8″x4.8″x1.3″
Barrel Length
3.6″
Weight
1.67 lbs
After spending some time on the range with the Steyr S9-A1 Pistol I now understand why Steyr has such a cult-like following. They aren't the most common guns out there, but my guess is because once someone owns a Steyr they don't let go of it. I'd like to hear from our readers. Let us know what made you chose or not chose a Steyr and what have your experiences been with them? If you own one have you kept the trapezoidal sights?

USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- I'm a bit of an AR fanatic.
My first rifle was an M16A2 at 17, courtesy of the USMC. In the 30 years since then, I have built hundreds of them. My collection is composed of multiple configurations in numerous calibers from 22 long rifle to 50 Beowulf and nearly every one in between.
With the exception of two of them, all were built by yours truly.
Quite a few of those parts came from Palmetto State Armory. I have found this South Carolina-based company to be both affordable and ultra reliable and have been buying from them since they opened about ten years ago. I wanted to try out a few of their products and PSA was more than happy to oblige. Mainly, I wanted to lay hands on their ARs.
They sent us one of their PSA-15 MOE Freedom rifles chambered in 5.56, and it ranks up there despite the sub $500 price tag.
Build quality on the PSA-15 MOE (Magpul Original Equipment) Freedom rifle is excellent. There are no gaps between upper and lower receivers. True M4 feed ramps are present, and the barrel is 4150V Chrome Moly Vanadium Steel. The carbine has an adequately staked M16 bolt carrier, and we like the fit and finish on the rifle.
The Magpul green furniture gives it a unique look, and you cannot beat the utility of Magpul's products. MLOK rails can be added to the handguard for the attachment of light, lasers, bipods and other accessories. The buttstock even came with a QD (Quick Detach) swivel installed. The rifle is available with black or tan furniture; we just liked the look of the green.
PSA-15 MOE Freedom rifle ships with Magpul furniture
As an iron sight shooter, we prefer the fixed front sight post, although some shooters who run dedicated optics or collapsible sight sets may not like this configuration. We wanted the accuracy and thought this would make an excellent choice for shooters who run either irons or optics.
PSA Freedom Rifle fixed front sight post
The trigger had a nice crisp feel to it, and when we pulled it out to see if it was an aftermarket type, it looked like a carefully polished Mil-spec trigger. This is a factory part that I usually recommend changing on most factory ARs, but Palmetto did such a beautiful job on these that I would suggest leaving it installed.
PSA-15 MOE Freedom Rifle – The Bad
It's an almost complete rifle. That is, there was no rear sight so if you think you can unbox this one and run to the range, you will need a rear sight or an optic mounted, first. It was easily remedied with a Magpul MBUS in matching green, however.
All it needs is a rear sight to be range-ready
That was the only negative thing we have to say about this rifle.
At the range
We fired 300 or so rounds of Aguila 5.56 ammunition in either 55 grain or 62-grain bullet weights. We suffered no failures to feed, ejector function. The PSA-15 MOE Freedom rifle ran flawlessly. With irons, we were able to keep it under 3 MOA and may mount a Trijicon ACOG on it down the road to see if we can't tighten that up a bit.
PSA-15 MOE Freedom Rifle – The Reality
All in all, I was more impressed with this rifle than I have been with rifles from their competitors in the same price range. PSA seems to keep their prices down by building the rifles in-house with their components. The PSA-15 MOE Freedom rifle is lightweight, reliable and a perfect base gun to work with from a novice to a more advanced shooter. Plus it represents a great value considering the quality of materials and the rifle's performance.
PSA-15 MOE Freedom rifle
If I were starting out as a shooter today, this would probably be the AR-pattern rifle I would choose. Aside from a rear sight or an optic, all you need to add is a rifle sling (see our Best Rifle Sling Review) and a light (see our Top 5 Carbine Weapon Lights), and you're good to go. This rifle gets my highest recommendation.

U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- Since the Glock 34's introduction in 1998, it has become a favorite of shooters seeking higher muzzle velocities, a longer iron sight radius, and the ability to keep a weapon light lens a bit cleaner. Sure there are a ton of other reasons that someone might choose the Glock 34 over the Glock 17 but those seem to be the most common ones.
The Glock 34 Gen 5 makes the third generation of G34 that we have seen and has its fair share of updates that place it in line with the rest of the Gen 5 lineup. The flared magazine well, improved trigger and barrel, ambidextrous slide catch, and new sight options should make potential buyers of the Gen 5 Glock 34 very happy.
The MOS System
With red dots on pistols becoming more prevalent than ever, Glock almost HAD to introduce the Gen 5 Glock 34 with the MOS plate system right out of the gate. While the plate system isn't as secure as some other mounting methods, it does offer a high degree of flexibility while keeping overall costs reasonable.
A Shield RMS mounted on the MOS slide.
While most are pretty familiar with the MOS system, I feel that going into the pros and cons of the system is an important aspect of the review.
Pros:
Allows the end user to mount a mini red dot (MRDS) directly to the slide of the pistol.
The four included adaptor plates provide a pretty wide selection of MRDS to choose from.
Installing a red dot is very easy and only requires basic tools.
Aftermarket plates are available that place some red dots like the Shield RMS low enough to co-witness with standard height sights.
Cons:
The MOS adaptor plate can become loose over hundreds of rounds and cause the pistol to lose zero.
Tightening the adaptor plate requires removing the red dot and will result in a lost zero.
The required adaptor plate prevents the red dot from sitting as low as when the slide is custom milled for the red dot.
That said, the MOS system is serviceable as long as you understand the potential drawbacks, ensure you use blue Loctite and make sure your screws are tight on a regular basis.
Gen 5 Updates & Features
The Gen 5 pistols from Glock expands on the improvements seen on the Gen 4 gun with a new ambi slide stop and a magazine well for the full-size frame models and they removed the finger grooves from all models as well as added the Glock Marksman barrel. There are a ton of other changes made internally like a beefer striker, a new trigger bar, and other small parts changes that come together in the form of a much more refined pistol.
The Glock 34 Gen 5 roll marks.
As you might guess, the upgrades are a direct result of the Glock 19M and 17M development for the FBI pistol trials. Glock made even more tweaks to the pistol and rolled it out to the civilian market as the Gen 5 Glock.
In addition to the standard MOS plate system, Glock also removed the large window at the front of the slide on the Gen 5 guns. Sadly I don't have a Gen 5 Glock 17 or a Gen 4 Glock 34 to compare slide weights. Even though it I wouldn't call it the most reliable information, what I found on the web suggest that the slide mass has not changed from the Gen 4 G34.
The Glock 34 Gen 5 field stripped.
The Gen 5 guns get a brand new coating called NDLc that should improve performance in adverse conditions as well as reduce the possibility of holster wear or scratches. Glock has also added the Marksman barrel to the Gen 5 guns that reportedly increases accuracy. The only way to really know is to get the gun out to the range.
The First 1,000 Rounds
I have a really bad habit of modifying guns within a few weeks of getting them, the Glock 34 Gen 5 was no different. I was able to get a range day in with the pistol in stock form and found that I really loved how it felt. Has the good idea fairy not struck, the pistol would have stayed completely stock.
First targets right out of the box were rather good with accuracy better than I have seen from stock Glocks in the past. The Marksman barrel really seems to improve how the pistol shoots when paired with the improved Gen 5 trigger's improved trigger break. After 200 rounds downrange in stock form, I sent the pistol off for the framework.
The Glock 34 Gen 5 magwell.
Since you aren't allowed to add a magwell in Carry Optics and the Glock 34 Gen 5 is legal in that division, should stippling the frame and closing that cutout in from up to finish out the magwell give a competitor an edge? I called my friend Tom at TXT Custom Gun Works who does just about all my stipple work and ran the idea by him. Not only did he love the idea, but he also said he would give it a try. Tom attempted to plastic weld a plug to complete the magwell but I was too rough on it for the mod to last. Not that big of a deal, I found that the cutout in the front of the grip didn't impact my mag changes at all. Tom also stippled the frame with my preferred pattern, something that he calls cross-hatching. While the factory texture on the grip is perfectly fine the addition of material to close up that gap made it an almost requirement.
While my plan of creating a “cheater” Carry Optics gun didn't work, the Glock 34 shot very well over the next 800 rounds of mixed range ammo with only a few issues with the MOS mounting system.
TXT Custom Gun Works' cross-hatch pattern on the Glock 34.
I didn't experience a single malfunction that wasn't deliberately set up to test the Shield RMS red dot I have mounted on the Glock 34. While I will go into more detail in another post, the Shield RMS is perfectly fine for range and competition use but I wouldn't recommend it for defensive or duty use. Look for a full write up soon.
What Do I Think?
After over 1,000 rounds down range, my thoughts about the Glock 34 Gen 5 MOS are mostly positive. You are going to get the obvious gripe about the plate style MOS mounting system that continually came loose while shooting. While that may have been the fault of the thinner plate from Shield, it still was really annoying. I am not ready to say that my experience with the Shield RMS was a failure so much as it was me using it outside of its intended competition role, but again, we will get into that in a separate review later.
The Marksman barrel offers a noticeable improvement in accuracy.
The only thing that could have made the Gen 5 Glock 34 MOS better? Offering a Gen 5 Glock 34 that comes without the MOS system. Sure, you can just run it with the cover plate, but I would have much rather been able to send the slide off to a machine shop and have it milled for my choice of optic. Since the MOS cutout is larger than my preferred Trijicon RMR that really isn't an option now.
Aside from the issues with the MOS plates that may have been the fault of the aftermarket Shield adaptor plate, I feel confident in saying that the Gen 5 Glock 34 is the best out of the box Glock to date.
What Does It Cost?
The Glock 34 Gen 5 MOS will run you $899 if you happen to pay MSRP. Street prices seem to be hovering in the area of $720 or so at online retailers like Brownells.
If you would like to know more about the Glock 34 Gen 5, head on over to the Glock website.

Two Reasons the AR-15 Will Continue to Be America’s Rifle!
USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Why is it whenever a product or service in America grows, gets popular, or dominates a market, the government steps in and feels the need to disrupt the industry and control it?
SUV’s get amazingly popular and the regulations on gas mileage explode. Internet sales flourish, and the painful and untimely talk of a national sales tax pops up like a pimple on your nose. Firearm background checks and transactions increase, the pressure on the banks from the politicians grow and they make it harder for firearm retailers to process credit cards.
The popularity of gluten-free products goes viral, and the politicians demonize it and call people bigots, fascists … oh wait. That one has not happened… yet.
The anti-liberty/freedom narrative always seems to go this predictable route. Something doesn’t fit a political agenda just demonize it or someone, tax it, regulate it, make it harder for citizens to own or participate in. There…the “problem” goes away eventually as they nudge and build fences around the edges. Your liberty is now infringed or taken away as planned.
The AR-15 rifle has been the battered stepchild of politicians and anti-gun people for decades yet the popularity of this platform for men and women of all ages is growing like a well-fed baby.
This AR firearm platform is a Cinderella story happening right before our eyes. In our gun-love-story, Cinderella’s glass shoe is a nickel boron bolt carrier group. The Prince in the great looking carriage in our story is an FDE Kryptec Cerakoted rifle chambered in an exotic round with a custom suppressor. Why do I feel this Cinderella AR-15 story will continue to grow and prosper (unless something drastic happens, like a November Blue Wave?)
Two reasons: The AR-15 is the most versatile weapon on the planet, and it is easily customized and upgraded for any size, shape, age person.
So many Americans are passionate about AR-15 firearms, that the popularity is growing in spite of the bad press, lying politicians, and a corrupt media.
The AR-15 platform is being used by so many people for so many purposes, it’s no wonder it’s so popular.
Personally, I love to predator hunt with my 5.56 NATO AR rifle with a fixed 3.5 Trijicon ACOG optic and an Aimpoint T-1 red dot offset. My favorite deer stand hunting rig is my 6.5 Grendel AR-15 with a Sightmark 3-18×44 FFP optic. Hog hunting with a 6.5 Grendel or 300 Blackout with Pulsar thermal or Pulsar NV optics are popular set ups, too. The latest 224 Valkyrie chambered AR-15 rifles are becoming very popular with prairie dog and small varmint hunters. The 458 SOCOM could be a short-range big game rifle with a nice quality 1-4×24 illuminated optic.
My 5.56 NATO rifle also doubles as a self-defense rifle. The .223 Wylde chambered upper makes a great competition set up.
People from all walks of life also build rifles just for the entertainment of building a rifle. You don’t have to be trained gunsmith to put together a great AR-15.
There’s also the comfort factor adding to the demand for this weapon system. This is a great firearm for the tentative-at-heart to use as the range for plinking, or general training. The options are endless.
So, when an ignorant politician or hyper-partisan talking-head tells you your AR-15 is only for killing, smile, laugh, and go ahead and yell at the TV. Shake it off because it only illustrates their ignorance or hidden agenda.
The AR-15 is an amazing platform. But that’s only half the story.
AR-15 Rifles are Upgradable & Customizable
Aero Precision Custom AR15 Rifles
The real beauty of the AR-15 platform is how easy it is for a person to upgrade their rifle or customize it to their needs, body type, artistic eye and specific use. For most rifle upgrades or customization, you don’t need to send your rifle off to a gunsmith. Because the platform is so modular, most of the parts are plug and play with very little manipulation needed.
Each upgrade can serve one or multiple purposes. Upgrades can be for many purposes such as:
Performance
Making the rifle more accurate
Improving your performance with the rifle
Comfort
Weight reduction
Body adaptation
Use
Aesthetics
Colors
Style
Let’s look at some of the most popular AR-15 upgrade and customization parts.
Performance Upgrades:
Starting with the lower receiver, here are a few easy upgrades.
Trigger
Upgrading a trigger can be quick and easy (with drop-in AR triggers) to a moderate upgrade. I personally upgrade my AR-15s with a Geissele SSA two-stage trigger for better and more accurate follow up shots. Learned this many years ago rabbit hunting with my good friend Dave. Using his upgraded rifle, I quickly noticed how my consistency on follow up shots improved dramatically.
Swapping out a pistol grip that fits your hand or improves your grip is an inexpensive upgrade. Some like Tyrant Designs MOD GRIP come in so many styles and colors, you can also enhance your look too.
Buttstock
A butt stock upgrade can be a performance part, helps with comfort, and aesthetics too. I feel it belongs in the performance category because it helps you with your sight picture and quickly obtaining the sight image through your optic for one. Some feel a fixed stock helps them with their accuracy. It’s also used as a reference point on your face for quick target acquisition. ( read our Best AR 15 Stock Kits review) I like a firm buttstock with no rattle, especially when I am predator hunting.
Ambidextrous Safety Selector
Battle Arms AR-15 Ambidextrous Safety Selector Full Auto Black
Buying enhanced AR pins for the rifle take-down is a cheap upgrade. These pins are generally easier to grab and pop out if you need to quickly separate the upper from the lower.
Upper receiver upgrades include:
Charging Handle
Stag 15 Raptor-LT Ambidextrous Charging Handle
Between my optic getting in the way, or my big fingers, a standard charging handle is one of the parts I upgrade first. My choice, an extended and/or ambidextrous charging handle. You can find these from next to nothing for the cheap overseas knock-off products, to a little over $100. The downside of a wider charging handle? When walking with your rifle, the extended handle can make noise hitting your body or clothes, or snag as you manipulate the rifle.
Aesthetically, there are some crazy color charging handles in the marketing if you are going for the NASCAR look on your AR-15.
Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)
Ballistic Advantage 5.56 Complete Bolt Carrier Group Nitride
There are several upgrade opportunities with the bolt carrier group. Most options are related to the finish material. The porous and affordable phosphate finish, the easier-to-clean nitride finish, to the shiny nickel boron finish. I personally get great performance and durability to my nitride BCGs.
Gas Block and Gas Tube
Ballistic Advantage 10.3” 300BLK Hanson barrel with a pinned BA Gas Block
Another performance upgrade opportunity. The gas block system is seldom seen, but when there is a problem, often heard. Some gas blocks and tubes are made of cheaper materials and can hurt the bolt cycling. There are also some adjustable gas blocks for those shooters who want to build a race-car and fine-tune the performance of the rifle. For me, I just want a durable gas system the works and will work for a long time to come.
Barrel
Ballistic Advantage AR15 Barrels
I could write an entire article on barrels. Pick a barrel that suits your needs. Will you be doing long-range target shooting? Then a longer barrel with the correct twist-rate will be an important factor in your decision. Hunting feral hogs in Texas at 40 yards at night? Then a larger caliber like a 300 black out or the ever popular 6.5 Grendel might be the best barrel for you.
Optics
The Aimpoint PRO is an excellent general purpose optic for the AR.
Optics is another opportunity for a lengthy article. Too much to talk about here. An easy upgrade to your optics-ready AR-15 is adding back up iron sights (BUIS) for your rifle. Magpul has some great light-weight polymer options. Be careful adding a BUIS to your rifle if the gas block has a picatinny rail attached. You will need to have a metal BUIS, not a polymer.
Please don’t ask how I know and why I mentioned polymer vs steel BUIS. Let’s just say it’s a school-of-hard-knocks experience and just leave it there.
Comfort Upgrades:
Comfort is important, not for the sake of feeling comfortable, but for performance as well. My wife and I have different predator rifle set ups mostly because of our body types, arm lengths, and overall strength.
Handguard
The handguard is available in the KeyMod and the new M-LOK hand guard systems
So many sizes, looks, and quality levels your head will spin. Length, weight, attachment design (quad, M-LOK, and Keymod) are things to consider. I like different handguard (or rail) options for different uses. My predator/self-defense rifle has a shorter quad rail for many attachments. My deer AR has less attachment opportunities but is a lighter rail. My wife uses a short polymer Magpul hand guard saving a lot of weight on her rifle. Start with your needs and go from there. I’d suggest staying with one system through if you plan on adding rails and attachments down the road. M-LOK seems to have the momentum right now.
Accessories
There aren’t enough hours and pages to be able to write about all the accessories available to you. Again, I would start with which rail system you want, identify your needs (bipod, forward grip, lighting system, laser, etc.) and go from there. Aesthetic Upgrades
Some consider the AR-15 the Barbie Doll for guys. Or an adult set of Legos. With tattoos becoming so popular, the AR is not immune to personalization like a tattoo.
There are specialists all over the globe who will be happy to customize your AR look.
A small company out of Southern Oregon created a thin coating process using a polymer-ceramic material that is extremely durable and can come in many colors and variations. Of course, the firearms business has embraced this process and you see it on Kydex holsters, to pistols, and of course, any and every part on the AR-15 platform. The cost is very reasonable and you can have a lot of fun picking out a new color or pattern for your rifle.
For me, I am using different color upper receivers and handguards for different caliber uppers. My 6.5 Grendel upper and magazines are in FDE. My .223/5.56 NATO units are in black. In theory, I won’t get my ammo and magazines mixed up when at the range on in the field hunting.
Make the AR-15 Your Rifle
As much as I love my Remington 700 Mountain Stainless 308 bolt action rifle, my favorite long gun is the AR-15. Why?
Because it is so versatile. I can affordably target shoot. I can hunt varmints and predators. With the right ammunition I can ethically hunt larger game like deer, hog, and for the right set up, elk hunt.
Let’s face it. It’s just plain-old fun to design, plan, build, and upgrade. The AR-15 is badass too!

USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- About a dozen years ago, many of the major American firearms companies began to incorporate innovative changes (substitute cheap alterations to reduce production costs and increase profits) into their line of centerfire rifles. The usual advertising hype accompanied each change claiming to improve performance and reliability. In their race for the bottom, they “compromised quality, reliability and longevity” (Chuck Hawk's words with which we completely agree).
These rifles remind us of the flood of cheap military carbines that flooded the U.S. Market following WWII. They were safe enough to shoot, but that is about the only positive comment one could make about them. While it is true that some were “sporterized” to make them more aesthetically pleasing, they were still military weapons produced at the lowest possible price.
These “innovative” centerfire rifles, like the Ruger American, Savage Axis and Remington 783, are destined to become dust collectors, doorstops and curios, as have most of their WWII counterparts. They have “taken undesirable–from the rifleman's standpoint–production shortcuts to a new low” that even we could not imagine as possible. Our readers will note that we are not talking about AR-platform rifles, which may be ugly (in our opinion), but are generally well made and functionally superb.
Before the internet trolls decide to attack us as paid shills, they should know that we are not paid by any companies, internet sites or magazines for our reviews that Ammoland so kindly publishes. If folks do not like that, they can fire us from our unpaid volunteer job and not read our reviews.
For over twenty years, one American company has refused to compromise quality for the sake of a few dollars. That company is Henry Repeating Firearms, lead by Anthony Imperato. From the introduction of their first Golden Boy to the recent introduction of the color case hardened Big Boy, they have maintained the quality of their firearms. The Henry motto, “Made In America or Not Made At All” should be modified to include “ Quality Firearms Built With Pride of Workmanship at a Fair Price”.
Henry Big Boy Color Case Hardened Rifle
Henry Big Boy Color Case Hardened Rifle
The Henry Big Boy has been around for several years, chambered in .357 Magnum / .38 Spl, .44 Mag / .44 Spl, and .45 Colt. It is available in both brass frame and steel frame versions and has become popular with Cowboy Action shooters as well as hunters. However, there were some of us who “wished” that the Big Boy was available with a color case hardened frame.
Call it nostalgia or a dream of times long gone in the “Old West”, the desire for a color case hardened Big Boy would not go away. After some extensive market research, Henry agreed and determined that a color case hardened Big Boy was overdue.
During their research, Henry personnel determined that color case hardening was as much of an art as it was a science. There were only a few folks in the United States who possessed the necessary skill to produce quality color case products. They found one of the best in Texas, where else? Bobby Tyler and his wife Paige run a small custom shop called Tyler Gun Works in Friona, Texas. Bobby is featured on the current cover of Brownells' catalog. His case coloring is arguably some of the best in the business (we think it is the best). As such, Henry contracted with Tyler Gun Works to color case harden the frames and fore end caps for the Big Boy.
Color case hardening processes date back to the late 1700s. The two main methods involve very high temperatures in a furnace. They are designed to heat treat the metal for maximum use and durability. The “type” of metal determines the temperatures used in the color case process.
Advances in metallurgy have allowed firearms manufacturers to produce their components at the optimum hardness. Hence, any color case process applied to those components must ensure that the original hardness and integrity are retained.
Tyler's color case process utilizes temperatures near 1200° with five different compounds. His method ensures that the original hardness of the receivers remains intact while producing a durable case color to the metal.
A second method, not used by Tyler, is commonly referred to as the “bone and charcoal pack” and involves temperatures upwards of 1600°. This method would re-harden the metal and compromise the original strength. This technique is unacceptable for most modern firearm components.
There is a third method which is considered a cheap case color. It involves the use of an acid wash to lightly color the surface of the metal. This process has no penetration and does not alter the hardness of the metal. As such, acid-wash case coloring is not as durable as case coloring produced with the furnace processes.
Case coloring in Tyler's shop is state-of-the-art and vastly superior to that produced over a hundred years ago. Our conclusion is that Tyler's case color on the Big Boy will last indefinitely, just like the bluing on Henry's receivers and barrels.
We selected a Big Boy in .357 Magnum/.38 Spl calibers for wild hog and whitetail hunting in south Texas. hardening It will also be a great plinking gun on the range. There is, however, one problem: Most of the current ammunition manufacturers have watered down their .357 Magnum loads. You read that right. They have reduced the powder to make the round more acceptable in small frame revolvers. Because of their reduced loads, many of the commercial .357 Magnum loads are not suitable for hog or whitetail hunting. We will address that problem after we discuss this new addition to the Henry “family”.
The Big Boy Color Case Henry rifle is absolutely one of the most beautiful rifles that we have seen in years. The deep bluing finish of the barrel is complemented by the flawless case colored receiver.
The wood to metal fit of the American walnut stock and fore-end is superb. It would be totally acceptable in a custom gun and is outstanding for a factory firearm. We are not sure how they do it; but, whatever means they are using…. keep it up. While we are on the stock…. the Big Boy has a real American walnut stock with a nice figure and deep color. No cheap painted hardwoods here.
The laser cut checkering does exactly what checkering is supposed to do… provide a more positive grip for the shooter. That is such an improvement over the stamped faux checkering on so many firearms on the market today. The only way that I could tell that it was not hand checkered was that it was too perfect… no slight over cuts or slips.
There are no plastic parts in this gun. This lever action rifle brings back memories of the Old West, like Geronimo and Annie Oakley. Ok, I'm getting a bit nostalgic, but that is what this gun does. As with firearms of that bygone era, this Henry has been manufactured with great care and owning one is a source of pride.
Henry updated and improved the original designs to accommodate modern powders and improved steel. They installed a rebounding hammer that cannot touch the firing pin unless the trigger’s deliberately pulled. Speaking of the trigger…. that is the only aspect of this rifle that we found needing improvement. There was enough creep as to be annoying at the range… that should be addressed and fixed; however, the pull weight was an acceptable 4lb. 4 oz. which allowed us to produce some very accurate results on the range. And, of course, this Henry, like all Henry lever actions, cycles flawlessly without jamming.
We used five brands of commercial ammunition in our tests for accuracy. We purchased from Sportsman's Warehouse (Remington, Hornady, Aguila, Sellier & Bellot). SIG provided us with their 125-grain V-Crown ammunition at no charge. We would have picked up more, but not every company makes .357 ammunition suitable for the tubular magazine of the Henry rifle and Sportsman's was not well stocked.
We mounted a Konus Pro 275 3-10 x 44 scope on the Big Boy using a Henry one-piece mount. We bought the Henry one-piece H012 mount (double check that you are getting the right part before purchase) designed specifically for the 2nd generation Big Boys. As with our scoped Henry single shot, we installed the Grovtec hammer extension (GHM 283) which makes it a lot easier to cock any scoped hammer gun.
We fired multiple three and four shot groups off our Caldwell Matrix Rest -(read our rest review) at 75 yards. Fifty (50) to seventy-five (75) yards is the range that most folks will be using the Big Boy for harvesting their game. It will be effective at 100 yards with proper bullet placement, which you should strive for at all ranges.
Comparisons of the velocity and accuracy of the commercial ammunition and our own reloads are listed in the following tables. Some .357 commercial ammunition is acceptable for hunting; however, if you wish to obtain the maximum performance possible with this rifle, it is our recommendation that you reload your own hunting rounds. There is a wide range of acceptable bullets available and multiple powders listed in most reloading manuals. However, there is really only one powder that you should consider: That is Hodgdon's H110 which was developed for magnum loads. If you compare our H110 reloads with Hornady XTP bullets to the commercial ammunition we tested, you will find that H110 reloads are superior.
Henry Big Boy Color Case Hardened Rifle Velocity & Accuracy Comparison of .357 Magnum Test Ammunition:
H110 Reloads, 125 grain Hornady XTP: Smallest group 1/2″; largest group 1 1/4″; average group size 3/4″
Scopeability: Drilled and Tapped for Henry Mount H012
Stock Material: American Black Walnut
ButtPlate: Black solid recoil pad
Length of Pull: 14”
Safety: Transfer Bar
MSRP 2018: $1,045
You can pay more and you can pay less for a lever action gun… BUT, it won't be a Henry.
Paying more will get you a foreign-made lever action, carrying an American name. Paying less will get you a couple of American guns but with fewer desirable features and questionable reliability. The bottom line: The Henry is an excellent rifle and well worth the price. Most dealers will give you a reasonable discount price below the MSRP. As such, this piece of “Americana” is worth picking up as a shooter and/or investment for the future.
